65 North Pickers at The Barrelhouse Ballroom
A banjo can set a blistering pace. With 65 North Pickers, the fun is hearing where the other three players take it. The quartet plays The Barrelhouse Ballroom in Chattanooga on Friday, January 22, 2027, at 8:00 p.m., bringing together traditional bluegrass picking and the wandering curiosity of a jam band.
Listen for the push and pull between the instruments. The banjo and mandolin can pack a lot into a few seconds, while the guitar and bass give your ear something to hold on to. The band’s style leaves room for tempo changes and improvised turns. That’s the pleasure of being there as it happens. You can follow one player for a while, then catch the others responding and realize the tune has gone somewhere you hadn’t expected.
If you’re the person who likes the long version of a song, there’s plenty here to listen for. If you grew up on straight-ahead picking, the familiar sound of those four instruments gives you a way into the band’s more psychedelic side. Bring a friend who hears music differently than you do. You might end up talking about entirely different parts of the same show.
